Midwood Gives Back

Doing it Again in 2010!

Join your neighbors as we continue to embrace the energy and spirit of Plaza Midwood by sharing our sense of community and giving back. It is the goal that this Annual Day of Service provides opportunities for involvement throughout the year.

7:30am to 1:00pm – Neighborhood Rummage Sale

Our Goal: Make a little cash, do a lot of house cleaning, and help those in need with donations – either all together or at the same time.

This year we will sponsor a neighborhood Rummage Sale that will be centrally located on the front lawn of Kilgo Church at 2101 Belvedere Avenue. We will be selling 12x12 foot spaces, including one table for $15.00. All proceeds for rented tables will go to support Jacobs Ladder and the Make Kilgo Mine Fund projects.  To learn more about these organizations, visit their websites at www.jacobsladdercharlotte.org and www.kilgoumc.com.

PMNA will take care of the advertising – including signs, a three day ad in the Observer, local fliers, website, e-newsletter, press releases and such.  You just need to show up. You will need to be there onsite to sell your items. If you would like to donate any items that do not sell, PMNA will contact local charities such as the Kidney Foundation to collect your items at the end of the sale. Check them out at www.kidneync.org.

Feel free to keep your sale proceeds – or consider donating them as well. If you do not want to donate any remaining items - no worries – It’s your choice!

Additionally we will be collecting items for Crisis Assistance Ministry. For a list of appropriate donation items please visit the Crisis Assistance website www.crisisassistance.org.  You may drop off donations during the Rummage Sale from 7:30 till 1:00pm.

7:30am to 1:00pm - Job Readiness Clothing Drive

Our Goal: To be responsive to local needs of job seekers by supporting local resources and providing clothing that allows them to "dress for success."

Unemployment continues to impact our area at record levels.  Please bring your clean (preferably hanging) gently used “career apparel” to be shared with Jacob’s Ladder participants in need  There are specific needs for men’s shoes and women’s plus size clothing (14+).

7:30am to 1:00pm – School Supply Drive

Our Goal: To be a resource for our neighborhood schools and support them by providing school supplies for children in need.

This year PMNA has actively cultivated a partnership with our neighborhood schools. Given our economic situation and current school cutbacks, community support is greatly needed to help children who are in need of basic school supplies.

Bring donations to the front Lawn of Kilgo Church from 7:30am till 1:00pm.

7:30am to 1:00pm – Pet Food Drive

Our Goal: To include our four-legged friends! We have all heard sad stories of folks who either can’t properly feed their pets or who have actually had to give their pets over to shelters or adoption programs due to lay-offs and joblessness.

We have a strong tradition in Plaza Midwood of nurturing and loving our pets and want to include them in our giving tradition.  Our partners in Neighborhood Watch will be coordinating this effort.

Bring your donations of dog or cat food (or treats) to the front Lawn of Kilgo Church from 7:30am till 1:00pm.

9:00am to 1:00pm – Volunteer Opportunities

Our Goal: To donate our time to families in need. For those of you that may not want to participate in the Neighborhood Rummage Sale, we are offering a way to donate your time by volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank.  Volunteers will meet at Kilgo at 8:30am.

2009 Midwood Gives Back is a Success!

The Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association's fist annual Midwood Gives Back was a huge success!   Over 30 houses participated in the rummage sale and many more volunteers gave of their time and possessions to several great causes.   See photos from the activities.

The day’s events included:

The PMNA would like to thank everyone for their efforts on a great day for Plaza Midwood!

The Newest PMNA Initiative - Midwood Gives Back!

The Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association is sponsoring a new event this year on , Saturday August 1st – Midwood Gives Back!  In our current economic times we are very fortunate to live in such a great community where we all have witnessed and experienced the generosity and helping hands of our neighbors – from picking up the morning paper for a neighbor gone for the weekend to helping remove a fallen tree after a storm.   However it easy to get caught up in the daily tasks and chores of life – careers, yard work, house cleaning, errands – and forget that there are those less fortunate than ourselves, both in our neighborhood and around it.  We would like to take a moment to give back to the surrounding community, to allow others to feel the passion and energy that makes this neighborhood such a great place to live.  The day’s events are as follows:

7:30 to 12:00pm – Neighborhood Rummage Sale

Our Goal: make a little cash, do a lot of house cleaning, and help those in need with any donations all at the same time (Giving Back in Multiple Ways!).  All of us can use a little summer house cleaning – and what better reason than to help make a little extra cash for summer activities or to donate to a group in need.  We would like to sponsor a neighborhood Rummage Sale – but no need to come to a central location.  Please put your items out in your driveway the morning of and sell away!  PMNA will take care of the advertising (signs, an ad in the Observer, local fliers, etc.).  You will need to be there to sell your items.  If you would like to donate any items that don’t sell, PMNA will have volunteers to collect your items at the end of the morning.  Please email Megan Jarboe and we will have someone pick up any items.  All items will be donated to Crisis Assistance Ministry.  Feel free to keep the proceeds or donate them as well!

9:00 to 12:00pm – Volunteer Morning at Second Harvest Food Bank

Our Goal: to donate our time to help hungry families in need.  For those of you that may not want to participate in the Neighborhood Rummage Sale we are offering a way to donate your “time” by volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank.  Our morning will be spent sorting, boxing, or packing food for those in need and/or helping to maintain the warehouse where donations are stored.  SHFBM accepts children to volunteer with one adult per child for ages 10-12. For ages 13-16, there must be one adult per six children. Ages 17 and up may be on their own.

Pet Food Drive

In addition to donating our time or household items the PMNA Neighborhood Watch Group will be sponsoring a Pet Food Drive.  Donations can be taken to the front lawn of Kilgo Church from 7:30 to 12pm on Saturday and will be provided to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
