How the program works:
We have identified numerous small businesses along The Plaza and Shamrock Drive that have an obvious need for cosmetic upgrades or repairs. As residents of Plaza-Midwood, these are the gas stations, neighborhood convenience stores, auto repair shops, and barber shops that you drive by on a daily basis. Many of them are unattractive, outdated, and in desperate need of a makeover. We have approached owners of some of these businesses, and offered them a chance to do something about it.
The Shamrock Neighborhood Improvement Program will coordinate with business owners to bring in both volunteers and paid contractors to make tangible improvements to these properties. This can include any improvements the owner desires, including:
- New paint job for the building
- Planting trees and shrubs
- Mowing lawns
- Picking up trash
- General landscaping
- Adding signage to inhibit loitering or crime
- Improving exterior lighting (i.e. motion dectors or dusk-to-dawn lighting)
- Repairing windows, doors, or signs
- Repairing or improving parking lots
- Any other improvements that business owners are interested in
Business owners will be encouraged to invest their own money into the purchase of materials, paint, lighting, etc...as well as cheap/affordable contract labor, when needed. They will also be encouraged to set up donation jars at their business, with signage referencing the project and information on how to volunteer.
As a resident of Plaza-Midwood, you know exactly which businesses we are talking about. You drive by them every single day. Many are unsightly, outdated, and in despearate need of repairs. Some may even encourage loitering or crime. This program will do what we can to make a tangible difference in the neighborhood. Something as simple as a paint job and flood lights can do wonders for the perception of some of these businesses...and our neighborhood as a whole. Could small business owners do some of these things on their own? Certainly. But for whatever reason, it is not being done. So the Shamrock Neighborhood Improvement Program will provide the motivation, guidance, resources, and labor to jump-start it!
