Dear Neighbors:

The July Crime Watch meeting has been RESCHEDULED for Wednesday, July 12,
2006 7:30 p.m. at Midwood Baptist Church (basement classroom) due to the
Independence Day holiday.

During the two Crime Watch meetings we had in June (June 7th and 14th), we
discussed areas of concern to neighbors in the Cochrane, Mimosa, Thurmond
area where residents suspected two young black girls of soliciting.
Cochran Residents also shared their concerns about a neighbor who gave
horrendously loud and disruptive parties that spilled onto other
properties. Finally, Nassau residents shared frustration about recent
property crimes on that street.

Officer Varnum shared his advice for handling these delicate situations,
which is too lengthy and intricate to recount here. He also asked
neighbors to look out for a faded, burgundy, mid-1990s Dodge Caravan. This
vehicle was seen leaving the scene of two break-ins.

In any case, if you witness illegal activity, or see a potentially volatile
situation brewing (such as drunken revelers spoiling for a fist fight on
the street in front of your house), call 911. Describe exactly what you
see to the dispatcher and tell him/her why this activity disturbs you. If
you express to the dispatcher that physical harm is about to come to a
person, the call will get higher priority.

Remember that the Police Department's manpower allocation depends on an
area's calls to service. That means, the more 911 calls Plaza-Midwood
residents make, the more officers they will assign to patrol our area.
Although people sometimes call 911 for silly reasons (for example, they
just got a whoppingly high water bill--this actually happened), I know our
residents are more likely to not call 911 enough. If you see someone
behaving suspiciously such as peering into your neighbor's windows, call
911.

ALSO AND I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH, engrave your goods with your NC
Driver's license number, and/or keep a household inventory of make, model,
color and serial number for your valuable electronics, tools and garden
equipment. For jewelry, take digital pictures of your jewelry. Simply lay
it on a towel with ruler in the frame and photograph it. If your camera
does not have a photo date feature, include a card in the photograph with
the date. Without these tools, the police cannot recover your stolen
goods. Even if you find your mother's wedding ring in a local pawn shop,
you need to be able to prove that it yours, so let's hope it has engraving
on the inside or you have a picture of it with a time stamp on it.

Yours,

Martha
