• The inaugural Plaza-Midwood-Chantilly Chili Cookoff is next Saturday (Oct. 16), from noon until, benefiting Hospice at Charlotte. For $20, visitors can get unlimited tastings of the chilis, plus beverages and live entertainment. The cook-off will be at 1318-D Central Ave., with competitors' booths decorated and (maybe) competitors in costume. Already entered: The Penguin, Joe's Raw Bar and Sammy's Deli.
